Organized by Mexico's Ministry of Culture (SC) and the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL), through Laboratorio Arte Alameda, the retrospective exhibition and catalogue Pedro Lasch: Entre líneas / Between the Lines (11/2023-5/2024) includes one hundred artworks spanning thirty years. It is curated by Lucía Sanromán.

Pedro Lasch: Entre líneas / Between the Lines is the first museum retrospective for this Mexican artist living in the United States. While renowned for his pedagogical and socially engaged artworks, this exhibition is centered on the presentation of thirteen key series from the 1990s to the present that include painting, drawing, sculpture, public art proposals, photography, and video installations. Lasch’s work oscilates uniquely between the aesthetic autonomy of studio art and community involvement; between traditional genres like painting or sculpture and participatory or collective artistic processes that include others— audiences and participants. These interests are joined by his commitment to the topic of migration, be it his or that of his many collaborators in the United States, where he has lived for the last thirty years, as well as other social and political subjects of great contemporary relevance. The exhibition's one hundred artworks are divided into four thematic sections, which include “art as a tool”, “games”, “fiction”, and “displacement”. Since collective work is essential to Lasch’s practice, five of his participatory projects will be reactivated by the Laboratorio de Prácticas Sociales Mx: Archivo vivo y sustentabilidad de saberes LAA as part of the exhibition.
Pedro Lasch: Entre líneas / Between the Lines is curated by Lucía Sanromán, Director of Laboratorio Arte Alameda. The exhibition is organized by the Secretaría de Cultura del Gobierno de México (Ministry of Culture of Mexico) and the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature), through Laboratorio Arte Alameda. The Laboratorio de prácticas sociales Mx: Archivo vivo y sustentabilidad de saberes LAA is organized with Duke University’s FHI Social Practice Lab and the Mellon Foundation. Published in Spring 2024 by Temblores Publicaciones, Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (National Institute of Fine Arts & Literature), and the Secretaría de Cultura (Culture Ministry), the exhibition’s bilingual catalogue (Spanish - English) will be distributed in Mexico, United States, Latin America, and Europe. Thoroughly illustrated with works from all series in the exhibition, it includes essays by Lucía Sanromán, Helena Chávez Mac Gregor, Marycar Bastida, Pao Gallardo, Paloma Gómez Puente, Renato González Mello, Anna Indych López, and Bill Kelley Jr., as well as an introduction by Lucina Jiménez (INBAL Director), and Alejandra Frausto (Minister of Culture).
Lasch was born and raised in Mexico City. He has lived in New York and Durham, where he is a professor and researcher in the Department of Art, Art History and Visual Studies at Duke University. He has also served as director of Latino/a Studies and is currently the Social Practice Lab director at The Franklin Humanities Institute. His solo exhibitions and projects include Open Routines (QMA), Black Mirror (Nasher), Abstract Nationalism (Phillips Collection), Art of the MOOC (Creative Time). Group exhibitions include MoMA PS1, MASS MoCA (USA); RCA, Hayward Gallery, Baltic (UK); Centro Nacional de las Artes, MUAC (Mexico); Prospect 4 Triennial New Orleans (2017), Gwangju Biennial (2006), Havana Biennial (2015), Documenta 13, Documenta 15, and 56th Venice Biennale (Creative Time Special Project, 2015). His pedagogical artwork ART of the MOOC has had over 68,000 enrolled participants in 134 countries since it launched it 2015.
Sanromán Aranda is the director of Laboratorio Arte Alameda (LAA), a pioneering institution in experimental arts in Mexico City, since 2019. Among many other exhibitions and projects, she has presented at the LAA Helen Escobedo: Total Environments co-curated with Paloma Gómez Puente and organized in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art of Monterrey (MARCO). In 2021 she curated and organized Deep Listening: Practices Towards the Upside-Down World {Yutsil, María Sosa, Naomi Rincón Gallardo and Fernando Palma Rodríguez}. Previously, she served as director of visual arts at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) in San Francisco, from October 2015 to 2018. Sanromán was associate curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego from 2006 to 2011 and has also curated retrospective exhibitions on Tania Bruguera, Suzanne Lacy, and Future Farmers.

Pedro Lasch: Entre líneas / Between the Lines es la primera revisión de media carrera en su país natal del artista mexicano radicado en Estados Unidos. Conocido por proyectos de arte en pedagogía socialmente comprometida y experimental, esta exhibición toma como punto de partida su obra pictórica, escultórica y de medios múltiples, y es conformada por trece series claves en su desarrollo artístico, creadas desde los años noventa hasta el presente. Se observa así a un artista único y que de forma inusual oscila entre la autonomía estética del trabajo de estudio y el involucramiento comunitario; entre el género tradicional como la pintura o la escultura, y los procesos artísticos participativos y colectivos que siempre incluyen a otras personas —públicos, audiencias y participantes. Estos intereses se unen en su compromiso con la migración como temática, tanto la suya como la de múltiples colaboradores en los Estados Unidos, país donde ha hecho su hogar desde hace treinta, así como otras temáticas que aparecen reiteradamente en su trabajo y que lo hacen vigente hoy en día. Anotando estrategias comunes entre series, la exhibición y sus cien obras se dividen en cuatro ejes temáticos: estos incluyen el “arte como herramienta”, descrito arriba; “el juego” —tanto en el sentido de diversión pero también de crear y acatar reglas; “la ficción” o la elaboración de hechos fingidos o inventados pero posibles para así perturbar sentidos preconcebidos; y finalmente, “el desplazamiento” que significa la re-localización o de espacio o de sentido asociada a un objeto en su contexto habitual a un lugar extraño, y así permitir el crear nuevos significados. La participación y el trabajo colectivo son fundamentales en la práctica de Lasch, es por esto que cinco de sus proyectos pedagógicos, presentados a partir de una interpretación libre de su archivo, se utilizan como herramientas para generar modelos de mediación, basados en su trabajo y reinterpretados colectivamente por participantes del Laboratorio de Prácticas Sociales Mx: Archivo vivo y sustentabilidad de saberes LAA.

Pedro Lasch nació y creció en la Ciudad de México; ha vivido en Nueva York y en Durham, Carolina del Norte, donde es profesor investigador en el Departamento de Arte, Historia del Arte y Estudios Visuales en la Universidad de Duke. Anteriormente en Duke, trabajó como director de Estudios Latinos/as y actualmente, colabora como Coordinador de Relaciones Comunitarias y director del Laboratorio de Prácticas Sociales Duke University. Sus exhibiciones monográficas incluyen Open Routines (Queen Museum), Black Mirror (Nasher), Absact Nationalism (Phillips Collection), Art of the MOOC (Creative Time).
